To help spectators enjoy polo safely, we’ve put together a simple guide outlining how to watch the game and move around the club grounds with awareness. Polo is played at speed and involves horses and flying balls, so understanding a few key principles helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
If you have any further questions about Polo, please do not hesitate to get in touch on email to polomanager@newforestpoloclub.co.uk. Don’t forget to check our fixture list to come and watch our riders in action.
Polo is a fast-moving sport played on a large open field with horses travelling at speed. Spectators are very welcome at New Forest Polo Club, and watching from the sidelines is an important part of the atmosphere. However, it is essential to remain aware of the nature of the game and the environment at all times.
The ball can travel quickly and may leave the field of play, while horses can change direction suddenly. For this reason, spectators should stay alert and keep a safe distance from the action throughout play.
One of the best parts of watching polo is being able to experience the speed, skill, and movement of the game up close. Unlike many sports, there are very few barriers between the action and the spectators, which creates a unique atmosphere around the pitch. Whether you are visiting for the first time or are a regular supporter, we encourage everyone to enjoy the relaxed setting while remaining aware of what is happening on the field.

Polo is played on a large open field, with horses travelling at speed and the ball capable of leaving the field of play without warning. Spectators are welcome to watch from designated viewing areas but should remain alert throughout play and keep a sensible distance from the action at all times.
Under HPA guidance, the playing field includes a designated safety zone around the pitch which must remain clear during play. This safety zone extends approximately 10 yards from the sidelines and around 30 yards behind the goals.
During play, access to the field of play and surrounding safety zone is restricted to authorised players and officials only.

The club grounds include clearly marked areas for parking, spectators, horse movement, and restricted access. Visitors are asked to respect all signage and remain within public areas at all times.
The pitch itself must not be entered while play is in progress, and spectators should avoid standing directly behind the goals or close to the ends of the pitch, where play and shooting angles can change rapidly.
The site layout above highlights key safety zones, restricted areas, vehicle routes, and public access points around the grounds.
Families are very welcome at the club, however children should be supervised closely at all times. Horses, vehicles, and fast-moving play mean that extra care is required around the grounds, particularly near the pitch and pony areas.
Dogs are welcome at the club but must be kept under close control and on a lead near the pitch, horses, parking, and clubhouse areas.
Parents, guardians, and dog owners remain responsible for safety and behaviour at all times while on site.
Visitors should take care when moving around the grounds, particularly in shared access and parking areas where horses, pedestrians, and vehicles may all be present.
Please observe all speed limits and signage around the site and remain aware of uneven ground, ditches, or other marked hazards. Drivers should move slowly and cautiously throughout the venue for the safety of all visitors and horses.

When a match or chukka is in progress, spectators should remain attentive and avoid unnecessary movement close to the sidelines. Balls may leave the field unexpectedly, and horses may approach the boundary areas at speed.
Spectators should not attempt to retrieve balls during play and should not enter the pitch during intervals or breaks unless specifically invited to do so by club officials.
Any instructions given by umpires, officials, or stewards for safety reasons should always be followed promptly.

Polo is a sport with inherent risks for players, officials, and spectators alike. By attending New Forest Polo Club, visitors acknowledge these risks and are expected to take reasonable care for their own safety and the safety of others around them.
The club aims to provide a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for everyone attending, and we thank all visitors for helping us maintain that atmosphere through awareness, cooperation, and respect for the grounds and those working on them.
Spectators are welcome at New Park to watch fixtures. We charge a small entrance fee per car (cash or card accepted) with toilets, food & drink available on-site. Between matches, we ask spectators to help repair the pitch by stomping down divots – you will not believe what a 300kg pony can do to our pitch!
